I went to watch the opening of CJ7 yesterday.
Though not a 'traditional' Stevphen Chow film, and without many hilarious moments, it is indeed worth the ticket.
A realistic story with some sci-fi or fantasy element, a sad story with a seemingly happy ending, a commoner story with beautiful yet hopeless imagination: this is common in all Stephen's movies. What's different is that CJ7 is no longer exactly a 'mo lei tau' film. If you are looking for a traditional Stephen Chow film then you will get disappointed. But if you are open to changes, you may still want to have a try.
The main theme, or themes, are the differences between the rich and the poor, and the father-son relationship. The former is very realistic and well depicted, while the latter is not so up to expectation. Touching, yes, but not very.
Kitty Zhang's character is a super wallflower. Not impressive at all.
I like the little alien dog so much that when I walked out of the cinema I wanted to buy the toy, but to my surprise it was not on sale yet.
